Portable Softgoods Kit for

Long Duration Missions (NASA x Pratt) | 2023

During the long duration mission, frequent use damages the soft goods components, which require repair to maintain their performance under limited logistical conditions. This project aims to create a repair kit for the soft goods components inside space travel vehicles under limited logistical conditions, we aimed to provide versatile tools that would maintain functionality while keeping the kit compact.

  • During the long duration mission, frequent use damages the soft goods components, which require repair to maintain their performance under limited logistical conditions.

    1. A compact, lightweight, and durable kit that can be easily stored and transported in CTB.

    2. Space-friendly and meets all the safety and quality requirements.

    3. Maintains functionality in zero-gravity, lunar, and Mars gravity.

    4. Provides a platform for repurposing CTB for soft goods materials and textiles.

    5. Provides various repairing methods that can be adapted to any textiles in aerospace.

    6. Ability to replenish during long-duration missions.

    7. Direct visual affordance for the repair guideline booklet.

    1. MMOD puncture of inflatable module

    2. Inflatable handle

    3. Interior of ISS

    4. Restraints (Cleat restraint system, PERS; belly pack, LRB, single strap, h-strap, USOS foot restraint)

    5. Webbing strap

    6. IVA suit

    7. Velcro (fasteners)

    8. Acoustic blanket

    9. Sleeping bag

Final iteration refined restraint placement and tension for improved performance.

All of the 3D compartments were developed with geometries optimized for 3D printing in zero gravity.

The guidebook was created with the knowledge that astronauts may have limited expertise in sewing or softgoods repair skills. It gives you thorough approaches to A-Z methods from different kinds of stitching methods, button installations, zipper repairs and all the related basic procedures.
